Artificial Grass Installation Tips

Remove Natural Grass

Use a sod cutter or shovel to remove existing grass and weeds. Be sure to also get rid of all roots and debris because any leftover organic material can create bumps or settle unevenly. Applying weed killer should aid in this process.

Add Base

Installing artificial turf requires a solid foundation. Spread two to three inches of crushed rock or decomposed granite over the cleared area. These materials drain well and won’t shift. We suggest tamping the materials firmly, ensuring they’re slightly lower than the surrounding surfaces to make room for turf thickness. While using a plate compacter or hand tamper, lightly water the materials to bind them together.

Lay Turf

Roll your artificial grass over the prepared base. Position the turf so the grass blades all face the same direction to create a uniform appearance. Let it sit in the sun for 30-60 minutes to warm up and relax. This makes the material easier to work with and helps remove wrinkles.

Cut Edges

Use a sharp utility knife to trim excess turf around the perimeter. Make small cuts rather than trying to slice through in one motion. Remember to leave a small gap between turf and hard surfaces like sidewalks. This allows for expansion and contraction with temperature changes.

Cutting Around Hardscaping

Make relief cuts around the edge of your artificial turf toward trees, sprinkler heads, or other obstacles. This lets you work the turf around the object without bunching. You should cut slightly less than you think you need, then trim it to fit exactly. You can always remove more material, but you can’t add it back.

Secure the Perimeter

Fasten the turf edges every six to eight inches using turf nails or heavy-duty staples, driving fasteners through the backing instead of the grass fibers. Also, keep nails about an inch from the edge to prevent tearing. Work from one end to the other, maintaining even tension to prevent wrinkles.

Spread and Brush Infill

Spread infill evenly across the surface using a drop spreader or by hand. Common infill materials include silica sand or rubber granules. Use a push broom to brush the infill down into the turf fibers, brushing against the grain direction to help grass blades stand upright.
